Who is responsible

The Typology Files is written and run by Thomas Geater as an individual, in the United Kingdom. For UK GDPR purposes I am the data controller for the limited processing described below. You can reach me atthomasdgwork@gmail.com.

What this site does not do

• No cookies of any kind, first-party or third-party.
• No analytics, no page-view counting, no session recording, no heatmaps.
• No advertising, no tracking pixels, no social media embeds.
• No account, no comment system, no login. There is one optional email list, described below.
• No third-party requests. Webfonts are self-hosted rather than loaded from Google Fonts, so viewing a page does not disclose your IP address to Google or anyone else.

Hosting and server logs

The site is a set of static files hosted by Netlify, Inc. (United States). Like any web host, Netlify records standard technical access logs when a page is requested: IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent, which are used to deliver the site and to protect it from abuse. An IP address is personal data, so this is the one place ordinary browsing produces any. I do not have access to those logs in a form that lets me identify or profile individual readers, and I do not export, enrich or analyse them.

Lawful basis: legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)), running a website securely and reliably. Retention is Netlify's, under its own policy, not mine.

Because the host is US-based, this involves a transfer of personal data outside the UK. Netlify contracts on the basis of the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

The AI Prompt Builder

The prompt builder runs entirely in your browser. Your selections and the generated text are never transmitted to this site or anywhere else, and nothing is stored between visits. Nothing you type into it reaches me. It is a text template generator, not a service, and as a matter of practice, real customer data should not be pasted into a general-purpose AI tool at all.

If you subscribe by email

The form at the foot of the site collects one thing: your email address. Nothing else is required and nothing else is stored. It is used to send you a line and a link when a new piece goes up, and for nothing else.

Lawful basis: consent (Article 6(1)(a)). You give it by submitting the form and you can withdraw it at any time by replying to any email and saying so, after which I delete the address. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything sent before you withdrew it.

Submissions are handled by Netlify Forms, run by Netlify, Inc. (United States), acting as my processor. As with the hosting above, this involves a transfer of personal data outside the UK, made on the basis of Netlify's UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. The form uses a hidden honeypot field to catch automated submissions. It sets no cookie and runs no third-party script.

I hold the list for as long as I am writing the site. If I stop, I delete it. The list is never sold, shared, rented or used to profile anyone, and there is no tracking of whether you opened anything.

If you email me

Then I hold your email, meaning your address, your name if you give it, and whatever you wrote, in my mailbox with Google LLC (United States), which is the provider behind the address published on this site. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in replying to correspondence. Because the provider is US-based this involves a transfer of personal data outside the UK, made on the basis of Google's UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. I keep correspondence for as long as the exchange is useful and then delete it. Emailing me does not add you to the list below, and I do not pass anything on.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask for access to any personal data I hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, object to processing based on legitimate interests, and ask for it in a portable form. In practice, for this site, that means correspondence you have sent me. Email the address above and I will respond within one month.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office:ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Copyright and use

The writing here is mine and remains my copyright. Quote it, cite it and link to it freely. Republishing a piece in full requires my permission, which I will usually give if you ask.
